In 1820, 4000 British settlers arrived by sea to become the first permanent British residents of the area. The first of three commercial ships to enter Algoa Bay on the 10th April 1820 was the Chapman. The Chapman Hotel & Conference Centre is named after this famous British Settler ship.
Established in 1998, The Chapman Hotel & Conference Centre is a family business, which is owned and managed by the Franklin family. The Chapman Hotel includes the internationally famous restaurant, Blackbeards® Seafood Tavern, which, besides being known as Port Elizabeth’s seafood landmark, has been a wine and dine destination for the tourism industry since 1975. Recognized as one of the finest seafood specializing a-la-carte restaurants in the Republic of South Africa, Blackbeards® is the oldest established restaurant in Port Elizabeth.
