50 years of age is a defining milestone in anyone’s life and is certainly an equally momentous landmark in the life of an organisation. While Seeff has evolved in both stature and size over the years, we have done so whilst being able to remain true to the family values on which the company was originally founded – those of integrity, passion and commitment…the same values that have given rise to the core values that define us today.

The 3 500 healthcare practitioners that are recipients of capacity building efforts annually, continue to increase the quality of healthcare in the system to benefit much more patients than the conservative figures quoted. Elim Clinic is more than half a century old. The Clinic was established in 1958. In 2008 we celebrated fifty years of existence, fifty years of grace, and fifty years of treating people with addiction problems. Elim Clinic has come a long way. The roots of Elim Clinic can be traced back to 1927 when a group of Christians working for the SA Railways of that time, noticed that many of their co-workers experienced problems with alcohol abuse. They founded an association called the SA Railways Temperance Union on 17 October 1927. The initial goal was to start coffee shops where staff members waiting for transport to their homes and changing their working shifts, could relax with a cup of coffee in a comforting environment. They soon realised that people that were addicted needed professional help. Elim Clinic developed out of this need. Although the letters “SAR” was linked to the name, the association did not have any formal connection with the S A Railways and Harbours. The original Clinic was a beautiful Cape-Dutch gabled house and was inaugurated on 1 September 1958. A modern clinic was built during 1968 which could accommodate 43 men. The name was changed to […]

What makes us different? At the Cedars we know that treating drug addiction with “legitimate” drugs is not a long term solution. We also know that many addicts are incorrectly diagnosed with psychiatric disorders other than addiction because they are either dishonest about their drug use, or experience similar symptoms to other disorders during active addiction. Many addicts get lost in the system of psychiatric medication and disorders, and are never afforded the opportunity to explore the legitimacy of their diagnoses, or even the possibility of being able to live life successfully without the use of harmful psychiatric medications. Some treatment approaches are far too quick to diagnose co-occurring disorders, without following the correct procedure for more legitimate diagnosis. Through these additional diagnoses, patients are treated with other mind and mood altering medications that delay and hinder the necessary process of connecting to reality, and learning to cope with life using various coping tools rather than other chemicals. A psychiatric label is in many cases used by the addict as a justification for selfish and defeating behavior, or as a stigma that hinders the addict’s successful return to a healthy self-image. We do not disregard the possibility that our clients […]

Since 1995 Houghton House Group has offered high quality, specialist treatment for those suffering with alcoholism and or drug dependency. Over time we have become one of the leading authorities in treating and beating addiction in South Africa. With almost 20 years of experience, the Houghton House Group has embraced the multi-disciplinary Minnesota Model of treatment. At its core the Minnesota Model has evolved to become a holistic treatment model that combines the expertise of medical and therapeutic professionals as well as counsellors that have first-hand experience with both dependency and recovery. In our experience the odds of recovery are greatest when both approaches are combined. Medical and psychiatric care covers the dual diagnosis of any other psychiatric conditions that often accompanies alcoholism and drug addiction, for example depression or other anxiety disorders. Trained counsellors that have gone through the experience of moving from active substance abuse to recovery are able to personally relate to the patients’ challenges as well as provide living proof of the new life that can be achieved in recovery. Our programme has been refined and shaped to manage a wide variety of patients in terms of demographics and diagnoses. We offer a full spectrum of […]
